Course Information

Different societies have long and complex histories and developments. Interestingly, queerness has figured in it. Could there be queerness in the indigenous and primitive societies that predate the colonial, the modern, and the western. By selecting certain cities in the world, we dissect the artistic, cultural, performative and cross-media practices to understand the survival and resurgence of trans and queer realities. Are there cross-cultural similarities in places like New York, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Mumbai in safeguarding queerness in dance, music, theatre and drag among others?

This course looks into how genders and sexualities evolved in time, space, histories, and cultures. We'll explore art, media, classical, and pop culture in shaping and by extension marginalizing queer realities over the years.
